- Abstract
The Dictionary of Old English Corpus (DOEC), made available on CD-Rom or online by the Dictionary of Old English Project at the University of Toronto, is the most comprehensive digitized collection of Old English texts today and as such an invaluable source for linguistic analyses of the Old English language. In order to make best usage of the corpus data, it is, however, necessary to acquire additional knowledge concerning the nature of the texts included in it. This article is aimed at linguists who consider using the DOEC for the analysis of linguistic questions that also involve awareness of the linguistic background of the texts, such as textual provenance, dialect and dating, Latin interference or text type. It presents an overview of basic aspects concerning the linguistic classification of texts found in the DOEC and is intended to provide a starting point from which more detailed research into the different textual sources is possible.
