- Abstract
Vascular disease is a significant cause of illness and death in the United States, but the field of vascular medicine lacks recognition as a certified specialty. Despite efforts to establish vascular medicine as a distinct field, it has not yet been recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties or accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education. However, the Society for Vascular Medicine has made progress in standardizing knowledge and certification in the field. Several studies published in Vascular Medicine demonstrate the value of vascular medicine specialists in providing guideline-recommended therapies, improving patient outcomes, and collaborating with other specialists. The journal is now calling for more papers to further demonstrate the value of vascular medicine in practice. The SVM Vascular Medicine Subspecialty Recognition Taskforce continues to work towards achieving recognition for vascular medicine as a subspecialty.
