The article presents a definition of "bioethics," a term coined by American physician Van Rensselaer Potter, referring to an area of knowledge and practice that studies and solves ethical and legal problems in biomedical science, in practical health protection, and in the development and application of biotechnologies. Topics discussed include the difference between traditional medical ethics and bioethics, and role played by cultural and historical traditions in solving boethical issues.
