This article recounts the history of Catholic clergy in exile during the rule of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell's strict Protestantism made practicing Catholicism almost impossible and many of them sought refuge in France. The author examines three general problems faced by these exiles: money, the relationship with church authorities and, ultimately, whether or not to return to Ireland.
