- Abstract
Purpose - Nanjing, Hong Kong and Boston represent three distinct places with different culture, history, economic and legal system. This paper aims at studying how these four systems affect residential developers' choice on fittings provisions. Design/methodology/approach - This paper is analytical. Literatures on System and institution theories are the backbone of this research. Supported by data from the three places, solid explanations on the phenomenon are provided. Findings - The individualistic culture in Boston is the major driver in provision of unique dwelling fittings which are different from all the dwelling units around. Collectivistic culture in Hong Kong and Nanjing supports the growth of standardized units among the same development project. Search costs and immature legal environment explain the existence of bare flats in Nanjing. Originality/value - This is the first paper which compares and contrasts the provisions of fittings in the three cities, supported by both system and neo-institutional economics theories.
