- Abstract
The article presents a study on 517 contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the U.S. waters, including pharmaceuticals, surfactants, and plasticizers, to provide a framework for future monitoring efforts. The study developed three ways to examine the ecological effects of CECs which include hazard-based, persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT), and hazard-based mixed with persistence and bioaccumulation potential. Results show that the methods identified 126 unique CECs as high priority.
