- Abstract
The article examines Birmingham's post-war suburban housing programme. Birmingham City Council constructed 464 housing blocks of five or more storeys between 1950 and 1971. In addition, the city undertook parallel programmes of building high-rise flats both in the central areas on slum cleared land as well as in its suburbs on greenfield sites. The use of high-rise in suburban areas depicts an important change in the nature of British cities. The Labour governments of 1945-50 and 1950-51 didn't grant the Midlands region a new town.
