- Abstract
The authors reflect on the successful treatment of the patients with American leishmaniasis, using the oral miltefosine, despite of the common mild diarrhea side effect. They state that Leishmania species are parasites transmitted by bites from sandflies, which can cause mucocutaneous or asymptomatic infections affecting around 2.4 million patients every year. They assess that there are several intravenous treatment options, but miltefosine interacts with Leishmania synthesis effectively.
