- Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze the meaning and uses of the written word in the works of José Artigas. This discursive body, situated between oral and written culture, between the Enlightenment discourse of liberal revolutions and the tradition of "caudillismo", constitutes itself as an "other" space of representation, whose legitimacy is not granted solely by the learned or the popular element, but rather, by a peculiar inflection of both. The article is divided into two parts. The first one analyzes the role of writing as a cultural practice in the context of Artigas discourse; the second one analyzes the discursive strategies used to construct that entity known as "people" as one of the legitimating axes of his discourse, on the basis of some of Artigas's most significant texts.
