- Title
DEMETER IN HERMIONE: SACRIFICE AND RITUAL POLYVALENCE.
- Authors
Johnston, Sarah Iles
- Abstract
The author discusses the Chthonia, an ancient Greek festival that involved old women sacrificing animals to the mythological goddess Demeter in the town of Hermione. The festival was described by Greek geographer Pausanias as a celebration that took place in the local temple, involved the whole town, and centered on animals being killed with sickles. The author continues with a description of the importance of sacrifice to ancient Greek culture.
