- Abstract
Objective: To determine the internal consistency and construct validity of the USMaP-i during the selection of applicants into the medical program. Methods: Cross sectional study was done on 486 applicants to the medical course in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The items of USMaP-i were framed from the International Personality Items Pool (IPIP) website. The USMaP-i was administered to participants just after the interview session of the student selection process. The Cronbachs alpha reliability analysis and factor analysis were applied to measure internal consistency and construct validity respectively. The analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPPS) version 12.0.1. Result: A total of 462 applicants responded to this study. The Cronbach's alpha value of the USMaP-i was 0.72. The Cronbach's alpha values of extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism and openness domains were 0.80, 0.83, 0.63, 0.81 and 0.70 respectively. Factor analysis showed that 60 items were nicely loaded into 5 constructs as their factor loading values were more than 0.3. Approximately 40 out of 100 items were removed from the inventory because their factor loading values were below 0.3 and they did not fit into the intended domains. Each personality domain of the final version USMaP-i has 12 items. Conclusion: The USMaP-i had shown good psychometric values. It is a valid and reliable tool to determine personality of medical course applicants. It is a promising psychometric instrument that can be used as a tool to assist in the student selection.
