- Abstract
Matthew uses the Old Testament often and in a variety of ways, in order to provide a multidimensional formation for his readers, especially in the area of apologetics. His 65 direct quotations can be divided into formula quotations and those that are not. He also employs allusions and rabbinic exegesis, especially midrash and pesher. On the other hand, the Jesus event reorients his understanding and hermeneutic of the Old Testament, especially with respect to eschatology. Besides apologetics, he uses the Old Testament prophetically, typologically, theologically, practically, and illustratively. Matthew 2:15; 4:8-10; 11:5, 19; 21:13 serve as examples of the principles explained in the article.
