- Title
My Mother's Story as a Narrative of Contradictions.
- Authors
Loewen, Mary Ann
- Abstract
The article examines the narrative of the author’s mother, particularly how she was affected by elements such as social norms, family expectations, and the emergence of feminism. Concepts of patriarchy and North American suburban life are discussed as parameters that shape lifestyles, and the Mennonite traditions to which the author’s mother ascribed are referenced as borders that reinforced sexist and policy-driven agendas. Numerous Mennonite authors and works of Mennonite literature are referenced as both being indicative of the mother’s story and as being lenses through which truisms about the mother’s story may be elucidated. The author establishes a theme around the inconsistencies and contradictive nature of modern life.
