The article highlights the prewar society and economy of Kanawha County, West Virginia and how the Civil War politics compelled social changes within its borders from 1861 through 1865. Topics discussed include the control held by the county's ruling class over the antebellum Kanawha economy, how the salt business shaped social relations in Kanawha society, and limits on the preceived authority of the secessionists.
