- Abstract
The article examines the struggle between coal operators in West Virginia and coal operators in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana between 1853 and 1933. It focuses on the commercial rivalry between the miners, with a particular focus on West Virginia's mining regions: the Fairmont Field and the smokeless coalfields (including New River, Pocahontas, and Winding Gulf). The impact of railroads on the development of coal mines in West Virginia is also explored, including Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W), Virginian Railway, and Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad. Other topics include smokeless coal, bituminous coal, and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA).
