- Title
A vade mecum for crossing the second translational "valley of death" in brain tumor classification.
- Authors
Louis, David N.
- Abstract
This article discusses the challenges and processes involved in translating brain tumor classification research into clinical practice. It highlights the three peaks and two valleys that researchers encounter during this journey. The first valley is crossed more frequently and involves pathologists working on translational work. The second valley is crossed less often and requires teams to develop consensus-driven approaches and resources for implementation. The article also discusses the role of various organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Consortium to Implement Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy (cIMPACT), national societies, and the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR), in standardizing tumor diagnosis and reporting. The author emphasizes the importance of considering the impact on patients, understanding the complexity of biology, and recognizing that guidelines are a work in progress. The article concludes by urging future brain tumor experts to work collectively and strive for successful national and international implementation.
