- Abstract
Elector Joachim I of Brandenburg was one of the most determined advocates of an imperial politics directed against Luther. The scholarship therefore assumes that political advisers at the court of Berlin-Cölln remained true to the papal church. The essay examines the relevant sources in order to examine the viability of this thesis. A first step investigates the group of bishops from Brandenburg an der Havel, Havelberg, and Lebus, who were among the Elector’s most important advisers, as well as a number of provosts that were regularly sought out to offer advice to the council. A second step scrutinizes secular council members that were active in Joachim’s more intimate circle. Whereas the clergy for the most part displayed no public sympathy for Luther’s doctrine, some evidence shows that secular councillors built a network with Wittenberg and Königsberg that greeted the Reformation with openness.
