RUFUS PUTNAM, AND HIS PIONEER LIFE IN THE NORTHWEST.
- Abstract
The article presents a profile of the life of the late 18th-century U.S. Army general and Midwestern pioneer leader Rufus Putnam. Introductory comments are given reviewing Putnam's military career in the French and Indian War and the U.S. Revolutionary War. Focus is then given to the work of Putnam in advocating and leading settlers to the Northwest Territory in the early years of the republic. Detailed accounts are provided relating his founding of the Ohio Company, his own pioneer expedition to the region, and his involvement in the Indian War. Final comments are also given discussing Putnam's personal character.
