Keywords: cardiovascular pathology; coronary artery disease; valve repair/replacement EN cardiovascular pathology coronary artery disease valve repair/replacement 2183 2183 1 05/11/21 20210601 NES 210601 We thank Dr. Imamura for the comments on our recently published study about the impact of iron deficiency (ID) on the outcome after elective cardiac surgery, which we read with great interest.1 Previous literature has suggested the possibility of ID being associated with underlying occult bleeding.2 We agree with Dr. Imamura in the assumption that underlying noncardiac disease, for example, gastric ulcer, may be activated due to perioperative change in medication, particularly concerning the addition of platelet antagonists or anticoagulation therapy. However, if in a significant proportion of patients with ID an untreated underlying disease would be present, then a negative impact on the outcome of ID patients would be rather expected.
