Mumps presenting as epididymo-orchitis among young travellers: under-recognition, missed diagnoses and transmission risks.

- Abstract
The article describes the cases of three foreign backpackers with mumps presenting as epididymo-orchitis in Australia in February and March 2009. The three travelers did not have childhood mumps vaccinations and did not undergo pre-travel vaccination. The lack of clinical features that distinguish mumps from bacterial epididymo-orchitis is considered. It is noted how some general practitioners and hospital clinicians may be relatively inexperienced in the diagnosis and treatment of mumps orchitis due to the condition's low prevalence in Australia.
