- Abstract
Qestrus ovis larvae are obligatory parasites of the nasal and sinus cavities of sheep and goats. Oestrosis in small ruminants is prevalent in Mediterranean and tropical countries. Occasionally, humans are affected by ocular myiasis (ophthalmomyiasis) and more rarely, nasal myiasis. A case of human ophthalmomyiasis caused by first instar larvae of Qestrus ovis in a 3 year old boy was observed in Gran Canaria. Acute catarrhal conjunctivitis developed within few hours. During the inspection of the eye several larvae could be observed, moving quickly over the cornea to the conjunctival sac. Rinsing and mechanical removal of the larvae lead to an uncomplicated recovery.
