STILL, JUDITH
- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between weaving and hospitality, with a particular focus on women's labor. Emphasis is given to the mythological weavers Penelope, Philomela, and Arachne. According to the author, the stories of these women both celebrate women's labour and creativity and detail the exploitation of women. Details related toward the profession of weaving in the early modern era and hospitality towards foreigners and animals are also presented. Other topics include the theorists Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous, colonialism, and veils.
