- Abstract
The article discusses the education of Hispanic American elementary school children who are English Language Learners (ELLs), particularly using cognates to help such students improve their reading and writing skills. It is noted that ELLs can have a difficult time reading because they encounter words with which they are not familiar and they must use context clues in the text to decode the meanings of words. Methods of teaching students about the context method include teaching students about synonyms and antonyms.
