The article examines a place-name evidence for the etymology of the Scottish term "carse" whose origin is described as unknown. Topics covered include the association between the term and the Norse-derived term "carr" according to the "Oxford English Dictionary," early spellings of the term, as well as pieces of evidence that the term was used by Gaelic speakers, and the earliest spellings of the settlement name Harcarse.
