- Title
New Light on Peter and King, the two Slaves Benjamin Franklin Brought to England.
- Authors
Hayes, Kevin J.
- Abstract
The article provides information on the African slaves Peter and King who were owned by American statesman Benjamin Franklin and brought by Franklin to England in 1757. The author focuses on an advertisement found in the newspaper "London Chronicle" that called for the return of a slave named "King." It is argued that such an advertisement complicates the dominant understanding of Franklin's relationship to slavery and identity as a slaveholder. Other topics discussed include the fashionable clothing allegedly worn by King and Franklin's correspondence with his wife.
