- Title
The Influence of Shirley's The Coronation on Marriage A-la-Mode.
- Authors
Denman, Jason R.
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the 1671 play "Marriage A-la-Mode" by John Dryden is presented. The author suggests that Dryden was influenced by the play "The Coronation" by James Shirley. The author discusses similarities of the character names in the plays, such as Leonatus and Leonidas, and in the plots of the plays. Also discussed is the romance "Artamène: ou le Grand Cyrus," by Madame de Scudéry, as a source for Dryden's play.
