- Title
THE POSSIBLE SOURCES FOR HUME'S COMMENT REGARDING EURIPIDES' DOUBLE-MARRIAGE IN OF POLYGAMY AND DIVORCES.
- Authors
MILLER, JON CHARLES
- Abstract
The article explores possible literary sources for references of polygamy in ancient Greece referred to in the essay "Of Polygamy and Divorces," by David Hume. The author considers the Greek texts that mention polygamy available to Hume and finds that "The Attic Nights," by Aulus Gellius, is the only one that discusses the possibility of Euripides having had two wives. Gellius' writings are also discussed by Pierre Bayle, an author that Hume is known to have read.
