- Title
DOUBLE-MEANING IN.
- Authors
Easting, Robert
- Abstract
The article focuses on the double meaning in the second verse of the early Middle English quatrain in "Parlement of Foules." The happy equation of sexual intercourse and a wrestling bout is supported by the associated occurrence of (or failure to) stonde, as in the lyric quatrain. The plurals in the first two lines suggest that the girl gave her big-shot hero at least two tries; her reaction is appropriately more thorough going in its `erotic invective' about disappointing sexual encounters than the author's discussion allows.
