- Title
EARLIER USES OF TERMS RELATING TO ENGLISH FOLK-DANCE.
- Authors
Garry, Jane; Shapiro, Fred R.
- Abstract
This article focuses on the earlier uses of terms relating to English folk-dance. The literary references reflect the ubiquity of folk-dance in the everyday life of the time. Archival records attest to the popularity of the Morris and other dances. Court and churchwardens' accounts, for example, frequently record performances and remuneration given the dancers. In view of the prevalence of dance references in literary and archival sources, it is not surprising that careful study of the vocabulary of such sources yields improvements to the historical record of terms relating to traditional dances such as the country dance and Morris.
