- Abstract
Erziehung durch Dienstmädchen is told from the perspective of a boy about six years old, and represents Schnell's own childhood experiences in a bourgeois family home in Wuppertal-Barmen from the period between early 1919 and late March of the following year. The characters are portrayed as types, and distributed schematically into two groups. The narrator's sympathy is focussed without reservation on the insurgents, whose actions do not seem to be motivated by social or political causes, but by a general sense of humanity. The events of March 1920 in the Bergisches Land are only alluded to, while the chronological data are sometimes misleading.
