The article discusses the findings of two studies which show that deletion of Pten tumor-suppressor gene has opposite effects on normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and leukemic stem cells. Authors of the two studies investigated the effects of deleting Pten in stem cells using an inducible deletion system in a mouse model. These authors also showed that rapamycin restores the function of Pten-deficient HSC.
