- Title
Ageing and Trauma: Narrative as a Scriptotheraphy in An Unnecessary Woman.
- Authors
Boutine, Mouna; Awad, Yousef
- Abstract
This article discusses trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder and ageing as they appear in An Unnecessary Woman (2014). It investigates how ageing characters cope with their traumatic experiences and attempt to re-build their shattered selves through narrative. It also aims at explicating the therapeutic function of writing memoirs in old age. The study centrally focuses on the memoirs of Alameddine’s ageing character and essentially reads them as a tool of empowerment. Since, hardly any critical study has been done on trauma and ageing in Arab diasporic novel, this study ventures into trauma, ageing and scriptotherapy as outlined by Cathy Cruth, Judith Lewis Herman, Suzette A. Henke, and Roberta Graziano.
