- Title
Congregationalism and Catholicity.
- Authors
Orchard, Stephen
- Abstract
The author considers the relationship between Congregationalism and Catholicity through the words of thinkers as diverse in ecclesiology as W. E. Orchard and Henry Barrow. The two terms are often considered to be at opposite ends of the spectrum of church order, and the author defines them carefully in relation to each other. He then follows the development of this element of Congregationalism through early persecution, through the Commonwealth and Restoration, the Enlightenment and the great Social changes of the nineteenth century, in England and in America. The conclusion is not that Congregationalism is the only road to genuine Catholicity, but that the Congregational understanding of Catholicity has a rich and beneficial contribution to make to how the Church universal.
