- Abstract
The article discusses the situation the children have to face when premature or critically ill child is born in their family. The birth of such child creates a crisis for the family. In such situations, all the family members as well as the hospital staff focus on the well being of the infant. In the process the other siblings in the family who also need attention get over looked. Devos Children's Hospital Neonatal Services has introduced a program titled "Sibling Night," which comprises of a parent group and a sibling group. A social worker, who serves as a group facilitator, addresses the siblings with an introduction about the plan. Depending upon the number of children attending, additional staff may be needed to facilitate the interaction process. The siblings are encouraged to talk with their parents, relatives, friends and teachers about their feelings. A respect for their feelings and privacy is demonstrated and a plan is formulated to address the issues, which the siblings may be reluctant to discuss with their parents.
