- Abstract
The article presents information on the definition of some vernacular terms or popular names of plants. Some of the vernacular terms defined include Heath, Heide, Hede, Lande, Steppe, Desert, Wüste, Puszta, Pusstynia, Pusstosch, Prairie, Plains, Pampas, Macchia, Garigue, Tomillares, Phrygana. These vernacular terms have the same original defition of uncultivated land. The scientific use of the terms vary largely in their application from the broadest to the strictest sense, from one meaning to a totally different meaning, according to the different language-groups as well as according to the varying views of individual observers.
