Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Not Even a Diagnosis in 2013!
- Authors
NELSON, CHERYL
- Abstract
The article discusses the traits and behaviors associated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, a psychological disorder characterized by selfishness, inability to feel empathy for other people and delusions of success. The author focuses on the removal of the disorder from the 2013 version of the United States' psychiatric manual, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM 5), and its implications for understanding and treating people who display a lack of humanity. A comprehensive history of the creation of the disorder and its display by historical figures and in the media is provided, including examples such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment in the 20th century, the 1941 film "Casablanca" and Charles Dickens' 19th century novel "Oliver Twist."
