- Abstract
The article discusses the historical development of Chinese Protestant churches in Hawai'i, with focus given to the extent to which various churches were self-governing. The article opens with a discussion of Chinese immigration to Hawai'i, with emphasis given to the religion of Chinese contract laborers. Efforts undertaken by U.S. missionaries to Christianize the Hawaiian population are also explained, as are the operations of Episcopal churches and the United Church of Christ. The author concludes by discussing Chinese acculturation in the Hawaiian Islands.
