- Title
Stents to Treat Coronary Artery Blockages.
- Authors
Livingston, Edward H.
- Abstract
The article focuses on stents to treat blockages of coronary arteries. It mentions that lack of blood supply to heart muscles due to deposition of calcium or cholesterol on the walls of coronary arteries results either in atherosclerosis or myocardial infarction. The patients with too narrow vessels have to undergo angioplasty which involves dilating the vessel by passage of a catheter equipped with a balloon. Stents are used during angioplasty to avoid narrowing of vessels again. It further informs that in case of uncoated stents medications are needed to avoid clotting of blood which may take place due to interaction of stents with blood. The article further suggests patients to enquire about the stent the doctor plans to use and duration of medication.
