- Abstract
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at St. Paul's Hospital (SPH) in Vancouver, Canada has played a foundational role in the hospital's history and growth from a small community healthcare facility to a recognized centre of excellence for primary care, specialty referral services and provincial programs, teaching, and clinical research. We describe the 100-year history of the laboratory and the pathology department beginning with an early history of the hospital itself, the establishment of laboratory diagnostic services, and laboratory activities under the early directors Dr. Charles McKee (1921-1925), Dr. Allan McNair (1925-1947), Dr. Harry Pitts (1947-1959), and Dr. John Sturdy (1960-1967). The important contributions of Sister Charles Spinola and Sister Columkille are also described. The department expanded rapidly in the latter part of the 20th century under the leadership of Dr. Rod English (1968-1982), Dr. Terry Rutherford (1983-1993), and Dr. Bruce McManus (1993-1998). A brief history of the relationship between SPH and two other Catholic hospitals in Vancouver, St. Vincent's Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, is described. We conclude with a summary of medical staff recruitment, transitions, and challenges in more recent times. While the laboratory emphasis has always been on providing excellent diagnostic care to the challenging and vulnerable patient population at SPH, provincial programs, innovation in method development, a major teaching commitment, and collaborative research all contributed to a strong, productive pathology and laboratory medicine department in an academic teaching hospital.
