In light of Post-Colonial Criticism, this article studies the Guatemalan writer Enrique Gómez Carrillo's description of turn-of-the century Japan, with particular reference to his book De Marsella a Tokio, and shows the influence on Gómez Carrillo's work of previous travel books on Japan and the role played by his assimilation of colonial discourse.
