- Abstract
Introduction: Hyaline Membrane Disease (HMD) is caused by the absence or deficiency of surfactant affecting premature newborns, and the treatment is performed with exogenous surfactant. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of exogenous surfactant therapy in respiratory disorders in newborns. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study was conducted in 31 newborns admitted to the Neonatal ICU of the Hospital Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Patrocínio, MG. For data collection, a script structured by the researchers was elaborated. The data was analyzed using the statistical tests: Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Fisher (p ≤ 0.05) and Wilcoxon (p ≤ 0.05). Results: The HMD is prevalent in females (51.6%), most premature newborns (83.9%) and with low birth weight (51.6%). Among those who required antenatal corticosteroids, 38.7% used two doses and the Grade III of HMD was the most evident (35.5%). All newborns used at least one dose of surfactant (58.1%), due to HMD (87.1%) and Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (12.9%). Conclusion: This study showed that the respiratory disorder most commonly in premature newborn was HMD, and proving the positive recovery of neonates after administration of the exogenous surfactant, thus verifying the efficacy of this medicinal product as a treatment, mainly using only one dose.
