- Abstract
The article discusses the involvement of Japanese immigrants (Issei) and people of Japanese ancestry (Nikkei) in the oyster industry in Washington State prior to 1942. It examines oyster picking, processing, and canning. The author reflects on Japanese knowledge of tidelands ecology and oyster production. She also comments on housing in float houses, industrial dangers, wages, and racial segregation. The involvement of Native Americans and Chinese Americans in the oyster industry is also considered.
