- Abstract
This study was designed as a follow-up to the study by Snow, Kern, & Curlette (2001) in which the researchers identified the personality construct of entitlement as a possible predictor of early termination in parent education groups. This study introduced interventions designed to address the specific characteristics of the entitlement construct that may have been related to the high attrition rate in those assessed to have high entitlement scores. The project consisted of 76 subjects who voluntarily enrolled in three 10-week parent education programs conducted in a large metropolitan area In the southeastern United States. Participants were administered the BASIS-A Inventory (Wheeler, Kern, & Curlette, 1993). Based on the criteria set forth in Snow et al., 29 participants were assessed to be high in the entitlement personality attribute and became the experimental group. Data from this study were compared with data gathered from participants in the Snow et al. study who were determined to be high in entitlement as well but for whom no intervention was administered. The participants in the Snow et al., study were designated to be the control group. Analysis resulted in statistical significance for decreasing the attrition rates in parent education groups based on this personality characteristic.
