- Abstract
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum has received a donation of a General Aquadyne GH-2 Helmet, which is now part of their collection of commercial diving helmets. The helmet was used by UC Santa Barbara's Physiology Department to conduct tests on the effects of cold water on the body. While it is unclear what specific studies were conducted, the information collected likely analyzed the effects of hypothermia on divers. The helmet is in excellent condition and it is unknown if it was ever used for traditional diving jobs. The General Aquadyne company, founded in the 1960s, was later purchased by DIVEX in England. The helmet is equipped with a universal fitting and a self-donning feature that allows divers to remove the helmet without assistance. It also has a unique modification to the upper faceport. The GH-2 Helmet is still used today in various applications such as construction, inspection, and nuclear diving.
