- Title
The Protestant Context of George Peele's "Pleasant Conceited" Old Wives Tale.
- Authors
Ardolino, Frank
- Abstract
This article examines the Protestant religious and political subtext of George Peele's "The Old Wives Tale." Peele uses the tropes of folklore, romance, and religious ritual to demonstrate the conflict between Catholicism and English Protestantism in the character of Sacrapant. This reading of "The Old Wives Tale" places the work comfortably in the company of Peele's other pro-Protestant texts.
