- Abstract
This paper studies La Galatea from the point of view of the protagonist’s possibilities regarding her choice of marriage. It analyses the position of the main plot within the structure of the novel; it examines other endings in Cervantes’ work that present problematic marriages; it evaluates Galatea’s feelings towards Elicio through the tension created by disdain and gratitude and considers two episodes that symbolically anticipate the agreement of the shepherdess's forced marriage: the wedding of Daranio and Silveria and the hunting of the hare. I conclude that, in the open ending of the work, the possible solution (Elicio's intervention to prevent the arranged marriage) is only fully satisfactory from a male point of view.
