- Abstract
One of the lesser-known works by the Castilian theologian Pedro Martínez de Osma (ca. 1424-80) is his Disputatio de anno in quo possimus dicere Dominum fuisse passum et de quibusdam erratis in kalendario, which he authored in 1468 in the aftermath of a public disputation at the University of Salamanca. With the present article, we offer the first analysis of this text, dealing in particular with Osma's unusual proposals for a reform of the calendar and the ecclesiastical method of Easter reckoning. After an introduction to the author and his text, Osma's ideas on calendar reform will be situated in their historical context and then be contrasted with those of his predecessor and teacher Alfonso de Madrigal ("el Tostado"). Another focus will be on the role of the Jewish calendar in Osma's arguments, which display considerable familiarity with the subject and a remarkable willingness to appropriate the calendrical calculations of present-day Jews for Christian purposes.
