- Abstract
This article aims to analyze how the Italian exiles in the United States were able to influence the American public debate in the mid-nineteenth century in order to create a generally propitious atmosphere for the cause of the Italian Unification. The main sources used to serve this purpose are both Italian and American press edited in the United States and the diaries written by the protagonists of the period. The debate about the political situation in Italy which resulted from the actions of the exiles was surprisingly deep, long and harsh in the United States. It was so present in the American mass media that we could legitimately consider this as one of the very first «great debates» in the history of the American public opinion. Despite the fact that valuable research about this has been conducted, such as Maurizio Isabella and Elena Bacchin's work, we still lack a compelling study about the Italian-American route during the period of the Italian Unification.
