- Abstract
In this study, Ahmet Rıza's political views that shaped Turkish Modernization were tried to be revealed through his approaches to positivism, religion, centralism and anti-interventionism. First of all, Ahmet Rıza's life is briefly mentioned to give an idea about the formation of his political views; then his works are analyzed. Finally, an answer is sought to the questions of what kind of a modernization model Ahmet Rıza's political views point to, and whether this model consists of systematic and consistent ideas or a confusion of contradictory ideas. For this purpose, first of all, Ahmet Rıza's frequent inclusion of Islamic thought in his works, which contrasts with the Positivist view he adopted, is emphasized. The fact that Ahmet Rıza expressed his discourses against these Islamic views outside the political and social sphere shows that he adopted a pragmatic approach to religion. It is known that this pragmatist understanding of religion adopted by Rıza was in close relation with the centralist and anti-interventionist approaches he adopted and ultimately with the positivist view. The Positivist thought that shaped Ahmet Rıza's thoughts is also an idea that shaped the Turkish modernization movement. In this sense, the Turkish modernization movement is a centralist and anti-interventionist movement. The view that is claimed to be an alternative modernization view and positioned against Ahmet Rıza's ideas is an anti-centralist and pro-interventionist view.
