The author presents a reappraisal of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and cognition. Topics covered include ECT as the only brain stimulation technique that has a proven record of safety and efficacy for severe and treatment-resistant depression and the need for the adverse cognitive effects of ECT to be considered a tolerability and not a safety issue.
